Do I really need a Structural Engineer for a wall removal?

Yes. If the wall is load-bearing, it is supporting the floor joists, the wall above, or the roof structure. Removing it without inserting a correctly calculated steel beam (RSJ) can cause your property to collapse. Even if a builder says it's just a stud wall, you are legally required to ensure structural stability under Part A of the Building Regulations. A Chartered Engineer provides the calculations necessary for Building Control approval.

What is the difference between an Architect and a Structural Engineer?

Architects design how a building looks; Structural Engineers ensure it stands up. An architect draws the layout, aesthetics, and flow. The engineer takes those drawings and calculates the physics — beam sizes, foundation depths, and column strengths. You often need both, but for simple wall removals, an engineer is the priority.

How much does a steel beam calculation cost?

For a standard single opening (up to 4m) in a domestic property, our fees start from £295. This includes the full Eurocode 3 calculation, padstone design, and Building Control-ready PDF. Multi-beam bundles (2–3 beams for the same property) start from £495. More complex projects (removing chimney breasts, corner removals, or loft conversions) are quoted on scope. A site visit is charged separately under our Site Attendance schedule (from £225) if dimensional verification is needed.

What is a 'Party Wall Agreement' and do I need one?

If you are excavating near a neighbour's property or cutting into a wall shared with a neighbour (a party wall) to insert a steel beam, you legally must serve a Party Wall Notice under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996. We can advise on this, but you may need a specialist Party Wall Surveyor if your neighbour dissents.

Can I just use the 'tables' online to size my steel beam?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely not. Online tables often assume generic loading conditions that may not match your house. They rarely account for point loads (like a strut from the roof), masonry weights, or deflection limits specific to your floor type. Using a guess-work beam invalidates your home insurance and will be rejected by Building Control.
